Safe Schools & Crisis Response

The Role of Parents & Families in Safe Schools & Crisis Response

Although incidents of school violence have declined over the last decade, high profile incidents such as those in Columbine and here in Pennsylvania have made it necessary for all members of the school community to address issues of school safety and crisis response. School district personnel understand the importance of prevention, and work with law enforcement and other emergency responders to plan in the event of an emergency. But parents and students play an important role as well. Parents have a vested interest in the safety of their children; The Role of Parents & Families in Safe Schools & Crisis brochure was developed so that parents and families can understand their role in safe schools and crisis response.

Act 44 of 2025:  Parental & Employee Notification of Weapon Incidents

We want to inform you about Act44 of 2025, recently signed by Governor JoshShapiro, a new state law designed to strengthen safety and communication within our schools.

🛡 What Does Act 44 Do?

  • Immediate notification: Schools must notify parents or guardians and school employees within 24 hours if a weapon is discovered on school property, during school events, or on school transportation.

  • Broad coverage: Notifications apply to incidents in single buildings, entire campuses, or school-sponsored activities, ensuring the right families and staff get the information.

  • Privacy-protected details: Initial alerts will be general and privacy-respecting. We will follow FERPA guidelines.  If a weapon is connected to a specific student, that student’s parents/guardians and teachers will receive more detailed, confidential updates.

  • Ongoing reporting remains: Schools will continue to report weapon incidents to law enforcement and the Pennsylvania Department of Education as required by existing law.

When Does It Start?
Act44 takes effect January 6, 2026.
