Welcome Back LetterAugust 1, 2019

Dear Parents and Families of the BASD,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  Whether you are a returning family or are new to the area, we are pleased that you will be attending the Bradford Area School District.  Our students will be filling the hallways of our four buildings on Tuesday, August 27 and we are all very excited to see them!

Throughout the summer, our staff has been working very hard to prepare for the return of our students: buildings have been cleaned and updated, materials have been ordered, new staff has been hired, teachers have been attending professional development workshops, and our administrative team has worked hard to ensure our procedures and practices best meet the needs of our students and families.

The first priority of all members of the BASD is the safety of our students and staff.   In keeping with the office of Safe Schools recommendations, we will be instituting some changes this year that we would like to inform you of:

Visitor Management System - In order to enhance school security, the District will begin utilizing the Raptor Visitor Management system.  This system is designed to register and sign-in visitors to each building and is widely used in schools across the nation for safety and security.  Every visitor who plans to enter a classroom within the Bradford Area School District will be required to present a valid government-issued photo ID.  The ID will be then be scanned through the program, comparing the information to a national sex offender database, and will then print a visitor badge which includes a photo, the name of the visitor, and the time and date.  If a match is found, appropriate alerts are generated so District personnel and law enforcement (if needed) can take appropriate steps to keep the school safe.  Raptor will also help us to keep a current log of all visitors in each building, will allow us easy access to custody agreements, and will enable us to easily identify visitors that could pose a danger to students or staff.  Since its inception, Raptor has successfully identified and alerted officials to potential dangers entering schools and other organizations where children are present.

Remind Communication System- Many parents and teachers have experienced the success of using the Remind messaging platform for communication.  Remind allows the administrators, teachers, coaches, and advisors to send quick messages via text, email, and/or phone calls to students and parents without revealing personal contact information.  This year, Remind will be the official “general” messaging platform for the BASD and will be used more extensively to communicate with parents and students.  Remind will allow us to communicate both simple daily messages to more extensive announcements or alerts.

Bus Stops - Bus routes and stops are assigned to students according to residence.  Our Board policy states that each student is permitted a maximum of two stop locations-their primary residence and one alternate location for custody and/or child care.  These locations are to be on a fixed schedule, with three days prior written notice to the bus garage if there is a needed change.  On a daily basis, we have numerous parents call the individual schools to alter their children’s assigned bus stop for the day.  Although we have tried to be accommodating in the past, the magnitude of these requests has caused anxiety and confusion for many of our younger students, for our staff, and for our bus drivers and has become a safety risk. Our drivers and our substitute drivers need to have an accurate log of the students who are on their bus each evening so that the children can be safely returned to their parents.  Therefore, we will NOT accept changes to a student’s bus route without adequate written notice.

Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation and for taking the time to review this information.  We are anxious and ready to make this year the best ever for each child in our district.  Please use our website to remain current on all events and to learn more about our initiatives.  Our district calendar is updated daily with activities at each building to ensure that you are always informed.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Katy Pude
