Career Development

Enclosed is a snapshot of some of the activities planned for your child at the high school level to assist them in their career planning and development....

Students within Bradford Area School District are exposed to a myriad of Career Exploration related activities and experiences that ultimately should lead to a designated Career Path beyond high school.

At the high school level and particularly in 9th grade, students can expect to continue using the "Matchmaker" program within the Xello in their Success 101 classes and will complete a number of valuable assignments attached to the results of this program.  One such assignment encourages students to select two occupations (one high priority occupation and another occupation of their choosing) to research in great detail in an effort to become more familiar with such items as:  salary, work conditions, training/education required in this occupation, skills needed, etc.

As students begin their sophomore year, all of them will take the PSAT's in October and the ASVAB's in November with results of both tests being shared and discussed in great detail typically in the month of January.

Within their junior year, all students will have the opportunity to participate in a mock job interview and many will have the chance to re-take the PSAT's a second time to further pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses in preparation for taking the SAT's.

As seniors, students are encouraged to finalize their post-secondary plans with support from teachers, administrators, parents, and their guidance counselor(s).  A formalized career based graduation project helps to finalize this process and make their dreams a reality.

One key component to the success of career planning and development is an individualized meeting with their guidance counselor in the spring of each school year.  Items discussed in this meeting include but are not limited to:  career plans, testing, grades, GPA, scheduling, college visits, attendance, financial aid, etc.

Should parents/guardians have questions about their child's career development and post-secondary plans, please contact their respective Guidance Counselor to schedule a phone conference or meeting.  Counselors appreciate parental involvement and look forward to sharing what we have discussed and learned about each child as they travel through Bradford Area High School.
