PROTECTED HANDICAPPED STUDENTS
(CHAPTER 15 - 504 Plans)
In compliance with
the law, the BASD will provide related aids, services, and/or
accomodations to each "protected handicapped student"
without discrimination or cost to the student or family. Such
modifications are intended to provide equal opportunity to
participate in and obtain the benefits from regular school
programs to the maximum extent appropriate to the student's
abilities. In order to qualify as a protected handicapped
student, the child must be of school age with a physical or
mental disability that substantially limits or prohibits participation
in or access to some aspect of the school program.
These
services and protections for "protected handicapped students"
are distinct from those applicable to exceptional students
enrolled (or seeking enrollment) in special education programs.
For
further information concerning the evaluation procedures and
service provisions available to Chapter 15 eligible students,
contact the school counselor.
Any
interested person, including those with vision and hearing
impairments, can obtain information concerning the existence
and location of services, activities and facilities that are
accessible to and usable by disabled persons by contacting
the Student Services Office at 814-362-3841 ext. 2507.
