Academics - Technical Education
Technology Education
Electives in the area of Technology Education consist of
four years of broad-based programs incorporating subject matter
from many different fields and disciplines. Emphasis is directed
toward hands-on learning activities. Students will develop practical
skills, create products and learn about the systems, resources and
materials involved in our technological world. Woodworking, screen
printing, computer systems and audio/video production, will be the
primary mediums used for product development. Technical Design is
an exploratory 4-year program offering students a background in
Mechanical Drawing, Architectural and CAD Applications. Students
will experience areas in communications, constructing, manufacturing
and transportation technology through individual and group assignments.
Industrial Technology Education
I
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1 Unit
The content covered in this course will be basic in nature. Areas
of technology included will be manufacturing, construction and communications.
Emphasis will be on skill development and safety in the operation
of power, hand and machine tools used in industry, while creating
individual and team products made of wood and other materials. Students
will study screen printing procedures and will be responsible for
designing and completing several screen print products. Computer
systems, laser printers, engravers, printers and CD ROM drives will
be utilized by each student while becoming familiar with state of
the art software used in this program. Audio processing equipment
will be used by each student to develop an understanding of the
use of audio systems in today=s society.
Industrial Technology Education II
Grade 10, 11, 12 - 1 Unit
Competency in woodworking manufacturing will be developed. Furniture
construction and wood joinery will be integrated into the course
work. Students will continue to investigate industrial practices
and procedures through the completion of a mass production product.
A factory setting will be simulated in the technology laboratory.
Individual products will also be completed and will include familiarization
with computer controlled equipment. Various audio/video assignments
may be completed by each student individually and in groups.
Industrial Technology Education III
Grade 11, 12 - 1 Unit
A third year of Technology Education will offer the student an opportunity
to pursue advanced work of a more complex nature. Student products
will be designed and constructed by the individual using all the
prior concepts developed in Technology Education I and Technology
Education II. Students will also be involved in a mass production
project. Students will produce audio/video assignments using the
audio/video lab. Students will continue to work with computers and
computer controlled machinery.
Industrial Technology Education IV
12 - 1 Unit
Industrial Technology IV will stress the group approach to learning
and product completion. State of the art computers and software
will be used by students and student teams to accomplish the design
and manufacturing of various products. Areas of technology studied
in prior years will be applied to new technology in the completion
of products involving communications and manufacturing. Various
printing and engraving systems will be integrated into the finished
products. A certain amount of community service volunteer projects
will also be completed by each student. Students will also continue
their development in the audio/video lab and editing room.
Technical Design I
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1 Unit
A technology course introducing the student to the areas of communication
and manufacturing. Units covered are: Instruments and their use,
sketching, orthographic views, pictorial drawings, dimensioning,
manufacturing process and related math. Students will have the opportunity
to apply their technical skills in the areas of air brushing, glass
etching, screen printing, desk top publishing, digital photography
and audio production.
Technical Design II
Grade 10, 11, 12 - 1 Unit
Prerequisite: Technical Design I
This course offers a continuation of Technical Design I background,
with additional emphasis on advanced drawing areas, model design,
airbrushing, silk screen printing, digital photography, video and
audio production. Students will be given the opportunity to work
within groups as well as individually on technology related projects.
Transportation Technology
Grade 10, 11, 12 - 1 Unit
Prerequisite: Technical Education I or
Technical Design I or Instructor Approval
The content covered in this course will offer interested students
an opportunity to explore several areas of transportation, involving
applications and developments. Individual and group assigned activities
will require model building, scaled layouts, variable testing and
researching the past, present and future trends in the area of transportation
technology.
Architectural Design
Grade 11, 12 - 1 Unit
Prerequisite: Technical Design I
Architectural Design explores basic architecture through drawings,
symbols, related math, individual designs, model construction and
manufacturing processes. Past, present and future trends in architecture
will be researched and applied to current study of architectural
design.
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Grade 11, 12 -1 Unit
CAD training prepares students to make typical mechanical drawings
with the aid of the computer using state-of-the-art software that
is used in many local industries. A background in Drafting and Algebra
is required before entering this program.
