Earth and Space Science

Grade 9 - 1 Unit
Concurrent enrollment Algebra I or Geometry A Scholar

Earth and Space Science presents basic information about the following:

1) the solid earth, including rocks, minerals and the ever changing surface
2) the liquid earth, including processes of rivers and glaciers
3) the atmosphere, including weather, its cause and effect
4) the extended earth, including the solar system and deep space

The interrelationships of a student's immediate physical environment combined with the scientific method, data analysis and problem solving will be a primary means of studying Earth and Space Science. Students will be asked to interpret trends and describe and design models identified in each topic. This course is intended for the college prep student.

Earth and Space Science (Scholar)

Grade 9 - 1 Unit

Earth and Space Science-Scholar presents basic information about the following:

1) the solid earth, including rocks, minerals and the ever changing surface
2) the liquid earth, including processes of rivers and glaciers
3) the atmosphere, including weather, its cause and effect
4) the extended earth, including the solar system and deep space

The interrelationships of a student's immediate physical environment combined with the scientific method, data analysis and problem solving will be a primary means of studying Earth and Space Science. Students will be asked to interpret trends and describe and design models identified in each topic. This course is intended for the college prep student.

Everyday Biology

Grade 10 - 1 Unit

Everyday Biology is the study of living things, and living things are a part of everyone's everyday experience. An understanding of biology will result in a better understanding and appreciation of life. Everyday Biology covers the basic levels of biological organization and proceeds logically to the more complex levels. The course is offered to meet the needs of the general student.

Contemporary Biology

Grade 10 - 1 Unit

In taking this course, students should gain an understanding of the biological environment and an appreciation of its importance to humankind. This course makes it possible for students to be able to acquire knowledge that may give them an understanding of life functions and of the factors that influence human development, growth and behavior.

College Prep Biology

Grade 10- 1 Unit
Recommended: 75% grade in Earth Science Scholar, current enrollment in Geometry B or Algebra IIA

This is an enriched program designed to explore the various fields of biology through the investigative processes of science and the history of scientific ideas. The goal is to provide an up-to-date course in the whole of biology through the understanding and use of biological inquiry. The major sub fields of biology are covered in the course and subject matter is divided into seven sections: cells, microorganism, plant life, animal life, genetics, evolution and ecology.

Everyday Physical Science

Grade 11, 12 - 1 Unit
Recommended: Contemporary or Everyday Biology

Topics related to chemistry and physics are correlated with hands-on laboratory experiments. Basic physical science concepts and principles are approached in a "down to earth" manner with many applications explained, discussed and demonstrated. Current issues such as chemical waste and its environmental impact are included as a major topic. This course is intended to meet the state requirements for a third course in science.

Contemporary Chemistry

Grade 11, 12 - 1 Unit
Recommended: 75% grade in Contemporary Biology, Algebra I and Geometry

Contemporary Chemistry is an entry level course in the behavior of matter according to the principles of atomic structure and thermodynamics of energy. Matter and its behavior will be discussed in detail according to kinetic theory; all matter is composed of extremely small particles which are constantly in motion. This course should be selected by students who wish to have basic understandings of the physical world about them; or by students who are going to need a background in science beyond biology. These students are typically interested in practical nursing, tech school and non-science oriented liberal arts.

College Prep Chemistry

Grade 11, 12 - 1 Unit
Recommended: 80% Algebra I and College Prep Biology, current enrollment in Algebra IIB or Trig A

College Prep Chemistry is an entry level lecture and laboratory course in the study of the interactive behavior of matter, energy and the atomic theory. Algebra skills will be used to compare data obtained in lab and used to extend or support textbook discussions held during lecture sessions. This course should be selected by students who are college-bound, regardless of major area of chosen study. The course will be approached from a skills and problem-solving basis to ensure maximum success in a college freshman chemistry class.

Contemporary Physics

Grade 12 - 1 Unit
Recommended: 75% grade in Algebra I and Geometry, current enrollment in Algebra IIB or Trig B

Contemporary Physics is a basic physics course aimed at college bound students who will pursue a career other than science and engineering. Topics included in the course include Kinematics (the study of motion) forces, momentum, energy, heat optics, electricity and magnetism. The approach will be such that topics in mathematics (Trig) necessary for problem solving will be included in the course.

College Prep Physics

Grade 12 - 1 Unit
Recommended: Solid 80% math student, current enrollment in Trig A or B

College Prep Physics is a traditional physics course with emphasis on laboratory work. Most of the "Laws of Physics" are verified using laboratory techniques. Problem solving methods involving trigonometry, scale drawing and graphical solutions are stressed. The basic objectives of the course are:

1) to know and understand the concepts of physics at an introductory level
2) to use mathematics as a tool for scientific interpretation
3) to be able to apply basic physics concepts to a variety of problem solving and laboratory methods

Solar and Stellar Astronomy (F)

Grade 10, 11, 12 - 0.50 Units
Recommended: 75% or greater in Earth Science Scholar, strong Algebra background

In this continuation of ninth grade Earth and Space Science, students study the solar system as part of the universe through a mathematical hands-on approach. The class will be geared toward students who have an interest in astronomy or a possible career in astronomy.

Physical and Historical Geology (S)

Grade 10, 11, 12 - 0.50 Units
Recommended: 75% or greater in Earth Science Scholar

In this continuation of ninth grade Earth and Space Science, the physical structure of the Earth, coupled with a look at the history of the Earth, allow the student to understand our planet through a hands-on approach. This will take place both in the classroom and also in the field. The class will be geared toward students who have an interest in geology or a possible career in geology.

Advanced Biology: Physiology (F)

Grade 11, 12 - 0.50 Units or 1 Unit
Recommended: 80% grade in College Prep Biology

Advanced Biology: Physiology is a semester course designed for extended study of the physiological activities of the human body. It is suggested that a student entering any biology or medicine related field take this course.

Advanced Biology: Anatomy (S)

Grade 11, 12 - 0.50 Units
Recommended: 80% grade in College Prep Biology

Advanced Biology: Anatomy is a semester course designed for extensive study of the anatomy of the skeletal and muscular systems. It is recommended that all students entering a biology or medicine related field take this course.
