Family and Consumer Sciences
Courses in this area are designed to prepare students
to competently deal with the challenges, pleasures and problems
of everyday life. These courses are designed to explore topics
ranging from basic cooking and nutrition to responsible parenting
and career exploration. This arrangement of courses is designed
to provide the basis for a career in a home economics area and/or
the basic living skills necessary in contemporary society.
Basic Food Preparation & Nutrition
(F)
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 - .50 Units
This introductory course is designed to acquaint students with
the essential elements of cooking and nutrition. Emphasis will
be placed on the Food Guide Pyramid, six (6) basic nutrients
and weight control. Also covered will be the basics of cooking
such as measuring ingredients, following recipes and preparation
of foods for a healthy life. This course is a prerequisite for
any other cooking class
Basics of Baking (S)
Grade 10, 11, 12 - .50 Units
Basics of baking is for the student who enjoys getting his/her
hands into batters and doughs and really mixing it up! The preparation
of quick breads, yeast breads, pies, cakes and cookies will
be covered. Emphasis will be on basic baking ingredients and
their functions as well as principles and procedures for preparation
of baked goods. Must have successfully completed Basic Food
Preparation and Nutrition.
Introduction to Parenting (F or
S)
Grade 10, 11, 12 - .50 Units
This introductory elective course is designed for students (male
and female) to help them understand the obligations and responsibilities
of parenthood. They also will gain insight into the physical,
intellectual, emotional and social development of infants, toddlers
and preschool children.
Parenting I (F)
Grade 10, 11, 12 - .50 Units
This course is designed to further explore the responsibilities
related to parenthood and/or provide a foundation upon which
a student interested in a related career might build. Topics
for consideration will include family planning, pregnancy, childbirth,
infant care and related consumer education.
Parenting II (S)
Grade 10, 11, 12 - .50 Units
Prerequisite: Parenting I
This course will cover the emotional, social, physical and intellectual
development of an infant through age one. Guiding healthy development
of the toddler and discipline will also be included. Must have
successfully completed Parenting I.
Parenting III and Related Careers
(F)
Grade 11, 12 - .50 Units or 1 Unit
Prerequisite: Parenting II
This course will deal mainly with the emotional, social and
intellectual development of children, especially the 3 to 5
year old. Students will develop and conduct activities that
are applicable to preschoolers. Career opportunities dealing
with children will be explored, especially types of child care
and early childhood education. Must have successfully completed
Parenting I and II.
Child Care Work Study (F or S)
Grade 11, 12 - 0.50 Units or 1 Unit
Prerequisite: Parenting III, Instructor's Recommendation
This program provides the student with first hand experience
working in a Child Care setting. The student will be placed
in a kindergarten, community-based day care or similar facility
to work with preschooler or kindergarten children. The student
will assist the facility personnel in the day to day instruction
and care of children.
Single Survival (F or S)
Grade 11, 12 - 0.50 Units or 1 Unit
This one semester course offers Aliving on your own skills for
the person who has a limited background in family and consumer
science. From choosing that first house or apartment, to sewing
on a button, Single Survival will give you the working knowledge
necessary to solve those everyday problems of making it on your
own.
Housing and Interior Design (S)
Grade 10, 11, 12 - 0.50 Units or 1
Unit
Students selecting this course will learn more about space and
design in housing. You will gain a foundation for management
of housing information as it relates to each individual. You
will identify and examine housing decisions and trends as well
as the elements and principles of design. Personal needs, comfort,
safety, energy needs and selection of appliances, furnishings
and equipment are included in this course. There is no prerequisite
other than an interest in housing and interior design.
